The old time custom of keeping up Hallowe'en was not forgotten last night by the youngsters of the city. The carved pumpkin lantern's association with Halloween is recorded in the 1 November 1866 edition of the Daily News ( Kingston, Ontario): The application of the term to carved pumpkins in American English is first seen in 1834. (In the original story, a shattered pumpkin is discovered next to Ichabod Crane's abandoned hat on the morning after Crane's supposed encounter with the Horseman.) In North America Īdaptations of Washington Irving's short story " The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820) often show the Headless Horseman with a pumpkin or jack-o'-lantern in place of his severed head. The folklorist Jabez Allies outlines other derivations of the name, "Hobany's", which is most likely derived from "Hob and his", with other variations including "Hob-o'-Lantern", "Hobbedy's Lantern" and "Hobbady-lantern". There is also evidence that turnips were used to carve what was called a "Hoberdy's Lantern" in Worcestershire, England, at the end of the 18th century. The term "McLantern" also appears in an 1841 publication of the same paper. In 1837, the Limerick Chronicle refers to a local pub holding a carved gourd competition and presenting a prize to "the best crown of Jack McLantern". On January 16 in 1836, the Dublin Penny Journal published a long story on the legend of "Jack-o'-the-Lantern", although this does not mention the lantern being carved from a vegetable. It has also been suggested that the jack-o'-lanterns originally represented Christian souls in purgatory, as Halloween is the eve of All Saints' Day (1 November)/ All Souls' Day (2 November). For example, sometimes they were used by Halloween participants to frighten people, and sometimes they were set on windowsills to keep harmful spirits out of one's home. īy those who made them, the lanterns were said to represent either spirits or supernatural beings, or were used to ward off evil spirits. Jack-o'-lanterns were also made at Halloween time in Somerset, England (see Punkie Night) during the 19th century. In these Gaelic-speaking regions, Halloween was also the festival of Samhain and was seen as a time when supernatural beings (the Aos Sí), and the souls of the dead, walked the earth. In the 19th century, " turnips or mangel wurzels, hollowed out to act as lanterns and often carved with grotesque faces," were used on Halloween in parts of Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. It is believed that the custom of making jack-o'-lanterns at Halloween time began in the British Isles. The carving of vegetables has been a common practice in many parts of the world. Modern carving of a Cornish Jack-o'-Lantern made from a turnip. History A plaster cast of a traditional Irish Jack-o'-Lantern in the Museum of Country Life, Ireland. Used especially in East England, its earliest known use dates to the 1660s. The term jack-o'-lantern was originally used to describe the visual phenomenon ignis fatuus (lit., "foolish fire") known as a will-o'-the-wisp in English folklore. Artificial jack-o'-lanterns with electric lights are also marketed.Įtymology An assortment of carved pumpkins. A light source, traditionally a flames from a candle or tealight, is placed within before the lid is closed. To make a jack-o'-lantern, the top of a pumpkin or turnip is cut off to form a lid, the inside flesh is scooped out, and an image-usually a "scary" or "funny" face-is carved out of the rind to expose the hollow interior. It is common to see jack-o'-lanterns used as external and internal decorations prior to and on Halloween. Jack-o'-lanterns carved from pumpkins are a yearly Halloween tradition that developed in the United States when Celtic Americans brought their root vegetable carving tradition with them. The name is also tied to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a drunkard who bargains with Satan and is doomed to roam the Earth with only a hollowed turnip to light his way. Its name comes from the reported phenomenon of strange lights flickering over peat bogs, called will-o'-the-wisps or jack-o'-lanterns. Jack-o'-lanterns are associated with the Halloween holiday. A jack-o'-lantern in the shape of the Wikipedia logo.Ī jack-o'-lantern (or jack o'lantern) is a carved lantern, most commonly made from a pumpkin or a root vegetable such as a rutabaga or turnip. A traditional American jack-o'-lantern, made from a pumpkin, lit from within by a candle. For other uses, see Jack-o'-lantern (disambiguation).

She is quite passionate about baked goods, and has the talent of recognizing which bakery the specific bun or pastry is from just from its taste, even when she's blindfolded. The only interest she has continued to like over a long period of time is instruments and food (all kinds of bread outside of spicy ones specifically). Support for fan-made levels can potentially expand your experience somewhat but the option to create your own is missing from this version. If you want a very artistically and technically accomplished Doom clone, Prodeus absolutely delivers. I didn’t find it debilitating, but it was certainly noticeable. Watch developers take you through what makes this stand out and how. Resolution obviously isn’t an issue as the game renders at an intentionally low resolution by design, but frame rate can struggle at times. Prodeus is a retro style FPS with all the options and comforts the modern era can afford. The Switch on the whole delivers a playable level of performance. Enemies use real time 3D models to generate lighting accurate 2D sprites in real time. Modern rendering techniques and materials are combined excellently with low fidelity models and texture work to create something that looks perfectly retro and perfectly modern at the same time. The technical side of things is where most of Prodeus’s originality comes in. Yes, it is an unapologetic Doom clone, but it is a very good unapologetic Doom clone. But here’s the thing: it also plays very well. Rarely will you see anything that doesn’t have a direct counterpart in the Doom franchise. Experience the gory thrills of the elder shooters, dialed up to 11 thanks to Prodeus’s delightfully demented dismemberment system. The infected gun wielding marine, the fire ball hurling imp, the large charging demons, the floating Cacodemon: they’re all here, and they’re essentially all that is here. Everything from weapons to enemy types is almost identical. While I generally try to avoid making my reviews too much about comparing one game to another, Prodeus’s greatest weakness is how subservient it is to the Doom franchise. Levels can be replayed from an almost Super Mario World-esque overworld map, encouraging replays to find everything. Finding secrets also benefits your progression as additional weapons and upgrade points are scattered about. Each level contains plenty of secrets off the beaten path and a surprising amount of visual variety despite a limited selection of assets. Level design feels very accurate to its inspiration and plays very well. Levels are somewhat non-linear, requiring the player to explore to find keys and switches, then return to access previously locked off areas. The level design of Prodeus is inspired heavily by early first-person shooters of the ‘90s. This is both a strength and weakness, as Prodeus nails precisely what it sets out to do, and thus brings little new to the table. It isn’t shy about these influences either, as they are reflected in everything from enemy design to the color pallet of item pickups. Prodeus can be summed up very quickly as a game that seeks to find a perfect balance between influences of classic Doom games and modern Doom. Prodeus is a first-person shooter with a focus on fast-paced combat, a pseudo-retro aesthetic, and lots of gory explosions. The bathrooms there were immaculate and Toto potties. We found nice chairs and the tv was on and we spent 3 hours there until it closed. Dinner was chicken, asparagus, caprese salad, fingerling potatoes, carrot cake and a glass of wine for me. The second visit was on a Saturday late afternoon through the closing time of 7:30 and it was less crowded. Must be 5 where they were coming from but my tummy could not take it so early in the morning for us. We just had orange juice but most guests were having their free mimosas or even beer yuck at that hour. The first visit was so crowded we were lucky to find seats. But is worth it if you have a long layover. Lots of walking though inspite of the Sky for us. And it is a lot of steps depending upon what terminal you are in but thank goodness for the Sky system which is fast and dependable to get you over to Terminal D where the Lounge is located. First time had the usual trouble finding it but on the second visit we retraced our steps. On both layovers within a week we spent time at The Centurion Lounge. Attempting to enter the lounge I was told you could only enter the American Express lounge for departing flights! For a business that is supposed to be an elite service provider it seems they have found more ways to tell customers NO more than yes! Considering my monthly spending with the company! The card I am carrying in my wallet and racking up all these international charge on isnt worth #crap! There has been many other issues that has caused me to start using other cards! I am glad I added other cards to my wallet because American Express bill for me has just gotten smaller! Used my Marriott Bonvoy card for my stay this time! This was a first and a lost of a few racks next month for Amex! Glad I made the switch thanks #CenturionLoungeHouston The bar & kitchen was already closing and I assumed I would wait like normal for my ride at the lounge! This is the purpose of having a membership is to be able to wait in a more secluded area. 1st I hate the word NO and it seem American Express Centurion Lounge seems to enjoy telling people no! I have watched others get turned away and it seems the staff is always elated! As a avid traveler I have full access to many lounges and today upon my arrival into #IAHInternational I visited the club 25 minutes before closing. In a world of social media we must not let these business off the hook for their racist policies. Especially the 12,000+ square feet offered at DFW. Delta lounges are the best (domestically) however still a far cry from Centurion in any airport. However, more Centurion lounges are on the horizon so will maintain Platinum level as Amex continues their growth. I struggle with the diminishing benefits of my Amex Platinum card as they relate to the annual fee. But when given the choice, always choose Centurion because I’m assured of fantastic and delicious meal options, plenty of seating, exceptional service, good wine choices. I have access to the Admirals Lounge (DFW being the AA hub this is the best of the best in D gates) as well, also Priority Pass lounges globally and Delta lounges. We are all entitled to our own opinions and have our own standards of “excellence.” Having just finished an absolutely wonderful lunch, chicken, roasted vegetables and a mixed green salad with goat cheese and am now finishing a very good glass of Cabernet, I’m confused by some of the poor reviews below. I’m sitting in the Centurion Lounge at DFW as I write this.
